I am utterly fascinated with WikiLeaks spattering the global news outlets this past week. Like an episode of Survivor, Joe the Plumber tunes in, vetting to see, through quasi-confidential cables who was making alliances with who, what the Americans said about Sarcozy and Ahmadinejad behind their backs, how the Chinese really feel about North Korea's nonproliferation stance, and who has been sleeping with the enemy when it comes to enriched uranium and strategic ground forces. While I understand the necessity of confidentiality in many circumstances, I cannot help but raise an eyebrow when I hear the U.S. Secretary of State decry the release of these noforn documents. Though the fringe theorist in me wonders if Wiki knows it was a pawn, the humanist in me says "serves you right" to those whose once stealth communications and surreptitious mudslinging are now water cooler banter.
I guess there is value in diversity, and the political world (like a good season of Survivor) takes all types of personalities to spin the cogs and get the ratings. It is probably why I don't enjoy the show..... It rewards secret alliances, ganging up on the outsider, and promotes anything but "in the sunshine" behavior.
The real tragedy in all of this, if I dare say so, is Julian Assange......
Why is it there was no secret cable regarding his utter mistake of a hairdo that could have pointed him to a good stylist before the news broke. Heck, maybe if the man had EVER experienced a good hair day in his life, there would have been no need to reveal the world's secrets via the ether, no alleged sex crimes, no need for enriched uranium, no hacker hits on Amazon.com, and no war on terror.
Julian Assange, your haircut may have cost us world peace.
